Episode 74: Shed the Shoulds with Dr. Wendy Schofer

This week’s episode features pediatrician and life coach Dr. Wendy Schofer. We discuss her journey into becoming a life coach after seeing her patients in her practice struggle with obesity. “Should” is a word I’ve tried hard to eliminate from my vocabulary and so this episode really was close to home for me. I hope you all enjoy listening to this episode!

Find out more about Dr. Schofer at http://www.wendyschofermd.com

Dr Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician, lifestyle physician and family life and weight coach. Her 16+ years in clinical practice has taken her from military medical practice around the world, to primary care and then to nonprofit community work. She brings experience having difficulty conversations, supporting parents through emotional and behavioral challenges, transitioning (repeatedly!) in the military, using lifestyle as medicine, and a big dose of fun to coaching. Coaching has brought a new level of personal satisfaction and enjoyment to her clinical practice, and is the elusive missing link for helping families enjoy health at home. She helps parents “shed the shoulds” to address the fears around nutrition and overweight, and become the confident role model for family health.

This week’s episode features Dr. Joanne Jarrett and her episode title is “Share Your Stories”. She is the host of the Fancy Free Podcast. She realized over the years that we all have embarrassing funny stories and that sharing these with each other is a great way to bond, connect, laugh together, and feel less alone in our imperfections. She believes it also changes our mindset so that we are not only viewing our foibles through the lens of humor and story telling, but we also look for opportunities to share them with others as a gift. Her advice to others is to share your embarrassing funny stories every chance you get. It’s addictive and infectious! She would love to start a movement whereby instead of being mired in isolating embarrassment, we are all laughing at ourselves together!

Episode 65: Solocast on 365 Days

Today is my birthday, and I’m releasing a solo episode reflecting on 365 days. I’ve journaled and blogged a lot over the years, and thought it would be a fun trip down memory lane to read some old entries of a journal I wrote in over 8 years ago. I entitled it 365 Days of Zen because at the time, I was reading a book of daily quotes from mindfulness leader, Thich Nhat Hanh. When we are in the moment and feeling overwhelmed, it is challenging to remember how far we have come. I don’t like to look “backwards” often, but when I do take a moment to reflect on and read some of the things I’ve written years ago, it is a gentle reminder that yes, I have come a long way. I hope that you enjoy listening to some of my old writings! And yes, today I am allowing myself to celebrate ME!

She is a part of the Lam Clinic, a team of physicians and health professionals who believe in whole-person care. Dr. Lam hopes to change the future of medicine by being able to provide integrative medicine as regular medicine for all. Her advice to others is that the way to wellness is not a bandaid or narrow focus, but to get to the root cause and make sure to look at the big picture with all systems in place. She advises people to take a good listen to your body’s symptoms and ask yourself why you’re having the symptom and investigate the root cause. Your body has the ability to heal if given the right tools.
