Episode 35: Centered & Grounded with Dr. Leena Honer

Dr. Leena Horner has been a practicing Ob/Gyn for over 20 years.  She has also completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.  In 2018, she felt a calling and decided to take a sabbatical from medicine to walk the Camino de Santiago.  Since her job at that time did not allow for a sabbatical she resigned to follow her heart and restore her spirit which was bruised and battered from work.  Additionally, there was a desire to deepen on her spiritual path.  For one who is spiritual and non-denominational, a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago may seem like an odd choice. As this is a traditional Catholic pilgrimage, the way of Saint James and culminating at the Campesino de Santiago Cathedral.  However, it is a path that many pilgrims seek to soothe their spirits and connect a community of seekers.
Since completing her journey, Leena continues to deepen her spiritual journey and is currently a student of the mystery school.  She continues to practice medicine with a renewed focus on overall well being and spiritual wellness as physical health. Episode 34: Owning Your Own Journey with Dr. Sarah Reck

In her own words: I am a physician, a mother of 4, and a fitness junkie!! I am an Anesthesiologist in Milwaukee, WI where I work full time practicing the full scope of Anesthesia practice. I am also a mother of 4 beautiful boys, ages 2, 4, 6, 8. Juggling work and motherhood is no small feat (especially with my crazy hours), and one of the ways that I make sure I am able to take care of everyone else is by taking care of myself. I do this by practicing self-care in the form of exercise. Fitness has taken on different meanings to me in different phases of my life and currently I feel like I have come full circle. I was a runner at the onset, but my fitness routine has taken on different forms as the demands of motherhood have taken over. For years, the best time for me to exercise was early in the morning or during kids naps and due to this I started doing more at-home workouts. As my kids are now getting older, I am now training for the New York City Marathon in Nov, 2020.

In addition to being passionate about fitness, I am also passionate about all things motherhood. I live by the mantra that you have to take and respect your own journey and try not to compare it to anyone else’s journey.

Last, but not least, my professional expertise in Anesthesiology and personal interests in
helping mothers live their best lives have recently merged as I created a course to educate
women about pain control options during labor and delivery with an in-depth look at epidural anesthesia and anesthesia for C-Sections. Throughout my 14 year career in medicine, I have placed thousands of epidurals and have been dumbfounded how little GOOD education and information is available about this topic. I have become increasingly frustrated with the fact that women are very educated about the labor and delivery process, but are little educated about epidurals. Thus, I set out to create a course filling this void. The course has now been released and is available for purchase at https://www.sarahreckmd.com/new-page-73

Episode 31: Mental Peace with Dr. Megha Agarwal

In Dr. Agarwal’s words: I’m a Southern California native of South-Asian/Indian heritage. My Alma Mater is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where I met my future husband. We have 5-year-old boy/girl twins and live outside of Los Angeles where I practice Cardiology.

I went to medical school at New York Medical College and after 4-bone chilling winters was happy to move back to Southern California where I did my Internal Medicine training at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and Cardiology Fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. I spent additional time training in Women’s heart health at the Barbara Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars Sinai and in Cardio-oncology at the University of Pennsylvania.

I became a cardiologist because there are many ways to make an impact in patients’ life: from prevention to early disease treatment with medications, to advanced surgical and non-invasive procedures and even transplant.  With the constraints on time as a practicing physician and my own personal health journey, I realized there isn’t enough time for physicians to meaningfully educate patients on preventive strategies for heart disease. This realization gave inspiration to develop Healthwyse: a science-based resource center and accountability program that empowers individuals to develop a healthy and sustainable relationship with food.
